GoFundMe and getting dirt under our nails

V and I decided to ask the public to help support the first round of pawpaw trees for the orchard this year. We have set up a GoFundMe account and are greatly humbled and honored by those who have donated anything at all. If you are interested in learning more about our GoFundMe, please visit www.gofundme.com/lostcreekpermaculture and donate today!

We also recently purchased 7 packages of "Giant Pawpaw Seeds" from Baker Creek Heirloom Seeds, a company we frequent when setting up our personal kitchen garden at the Broadmoor Food Forest. These seeds were collected from a well-known orchard in Kentucky which is home to almost every named variety of pawpaw that exists. Each package of seeds was advertised as containing 5 seeds, but we were pleasantly surprised to see each package contains at least 5 seeds. We also ordered RootMaker Express propagation trays and 1-gallon Air Pruning containers and intended on planting 35 seedlings to prepare for next year's planting (we intend on seeding the forest behind the orchard with pawpaw as well as planting orchard rows to capitalize on the pawpaw's unique preference to the understory layer of a forest.)

After opening 5 packages, we had 35 seeds in a roughly 50/50 mix of coco noir and perlite on Saturday, February 17. We have another 2 packages we will plant when the additional propagation cells arrive, hopefully before Friday of this week.

The RootMaker system is a unique system of containers which will air prune not only the taproot, but any secondary roots which grow in response to the taproot's pruning. This happens instead of wrapping around a container which is a huge problem when growing trees of any type, but especially trees with a strong taproot such as the pawpaw. This taproot is also what makes the pawpaw tree notoriously hard to transplant. We are looking forward to having massive, healthy root systems for our pawpaw seedlings next year when we plan on putting them in the ground. Stay tuned to follow along!

But for now... pictures of the inaugural class of Lost Creek Permaculture pawpaw seedlings!
